Post 1 of 6 – Where It All Began
From Facilities to Future: The Spark That Ignited a Sustainability Mission
Every journey begins with a single step. Mine started unexpectedly within the walls of the Bank of Guyana, where I stepped into a managerial role in the Facilities Management Department. As a freshly graduated electrical engineer, I hadn’t even considered FM as a career path. In fact, I often found myself wondering how I ended up here. But that question soon gave way to a deeper purpose. Driven by a passion to add value wherever I go, I focused my energy on improving organizational productivity through healthier, safer, and more efficient buildings.
From managing hard FM services at the Bank of Guyana to overseeing soft FM services and safety at the Central Bank of Barbados, I saw firsthand how infrastructure design and operation could impact people, performance, and organizational costs. But the more I worked, the more I realized this wasn’t just about buildings. It was about the understanding of FM and more importantly, it was about mindsets of the practitioners and decision makers.
That’s when the vision expanded. I realized the strategies we used within organizations needed to be overhauled. It wasn’t just about changing processes, it was about transforming the way we think about FM. From maintenance workers to decision-makers, from technicians to facility managers, everyone needed to adopt a new mindset, one that applied the science of FM in the context of the environment and climate resilience, whether nationally or regionally.
Motivated by this shift, I began organizing regional workshops, conferences, and training programs on Sustainable Facilities Management, bringing together professionals across the Caribbean. These events tackled topics like Health & Safety, Energy Efficiency, and Productivity and gave rise to a community of change agents ready to rethink the role of FM in development.
The feedback was inspiring. Many of their stories and testimonials are featured on our website h2assetinc.com proof that the seeds we planted were starting to grow across the region.
What started as a surprising turn in my career has evolved into a regional and global mission. Today, through H2 Asset Inc. (Barbados) and H2 Asset Guyana Inc., I’m proud to offer bold, science-backed solutions aimed at:
– Building infrastructure resilience
– Championing energy efficiency
– Advancing climate-smart strategies for Small Island Developing States (SIDS)
This is My Sustainability Story.
And it’s only just beginning.
Stay tuned for Part 2 of 6 – Bringing It Home.
